How to Replace a Three-Handle Tub and Shower Faucet in 9 Steps
Step #1: Find the Source of the Leak
You might encounter any of the following leak problems:
- Underneath the handle on the wall
- Water dripping at the tub spout or shower head
If your shower has an access panel, determine which side (hot or cold) is leaking by turning off the water one at a time.
Step #2: Turn Off Your Main Water Source
Once you have determined the source of the leak, turn off your main water supply to your home, which you can find in the street near you.
Step #3: Remove the Index Cap and Screw in the Handle
The index cap is located or attached in the center of the handle.
You need to remove it to reveal the handle screw tip.
Note: If the index cap is too tight, you may need to gently loosen it using a flathead screwdriver.
Once done, loosen the handle screw.
Remember: Set aside the index cap, handle screw, and the handle in one place.
This is so you can easily locate them after you’re done with the job.
Step #4: Pull Out the Stem
Plastic Stem
If you have a plastic stem, unscrew the retainer nut and pull it out first.
Brass Stem
If you have a brass stem, rotate it counterclockwise using a wrench to remove it.
Step #5: Check the Washer
You will usually see a washer located on the lower end of the stem.
A faucet washer is a small, round rubber that fits inside the faucet used for tight sealing and preventing leaks.
If the washer is squeezed flat or appears to be loosened, then you’ll need to replace it.
Contact your local hardware store for a faucet washer replacement.
Step #6: Check the Faucet Seat
The faucet seat is located at the base and is used to turn the water on and off while the washer is seated directly on top of it.
If your washer is broken, then it’s recommended to replace your faucet seat using an Allen wrench or a seat removal tool.
Replace your faucet seat to ensure it has a tight seal between the stem and washer.
Turn the faucet seat counterclockwise to loosen it.
Step #7: Install the New Stem
Replace the plastic stem by putting it into the faucet body next to the screw on the retainer nut.
Stem with Spring and Rubber Seat
The spring needs to go in the faucet body first while the rubber seat must be put on top.
Brass Stem
Turn the brass stem to the open position then rotate the faucet body clockwise to tighten it using a wrench.
Step #8: Re-install the Handle and Index Cap
Easily place the handle over the stem and tighten it with a screw using a screwdriver.
Once done, put the index cap back on securely.
Step #9: Test it Out
Turn the water supply on and test if there’s a leak or not.
If there’s still a leakage, it’s best to contact your local plumber immediately.
